Evening Psalms 124; 115

1When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

7“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

8“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Beatitudes aren’t just Jesus’ introduction to the Sermon on the Mount, but a familiar literary device in the ancient world. Here Jesus announces that our present troubles are actually a promise from God to intervene. We can even add our own:

Blessed are you when your children worry about you, for you have raised them in faith.

Blessed are you when you care for your children, for they will care for you.

Blessed are you when you work at home, because our home is with God, and God’s work is us.

Blessed are you when you are alone, for God is with you.

Blessed are you who are doubting, for God keeps faith with you.

Blessed are you when you’re tired, for Jesus will give you rest.

Blessed are you when you’re afraid, for perfect love casts out fear.

Blessed are you when you pray, for God prays for you.

God, let your blessing rest with us, that we might rest with you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
