Nicole’s e-Pistle “Presbyterian Heritage Tour”

September 23, 2026

Greetings, Friends!

One of my favorite things to do is travel. I love to see new places, meet new people, and of course, learn about history where history happened. When I travel, it reminds me that what I consider “normal” is not necessarily the same in other parts of the world. It shifts my perspective from being quite so centered around my own ideas and culture, allowing me to see the world through new eyes.

One of the places I have wanted to visit for a very long time is Scotland. I have familial roots there, and there is something about Celtic and Gaelic music and language that enlivens my soul. Yet another draw for me is that the foundation of Presbyterianism was born out of Scotland in 1560, when John Knox wrote the Scots Confession and pushed for a decisive break with the Roman Catholicism. Under this new system, spiritual authority rested with elected elders, or presbyters, rather than with bishops, and the new Calvinist theology emphasized the sovereignty of God, the authority of Scripture, and maintaining a disciplined church life.

Several of our members have had the good fortune of visiting Scotland recently, and their stories reignited my longing to finally see Scotland for myself. Then, yesterday, Presbyterian Outlook advertised an amazing opportunity for congregations to take a tour of Scotland, specifically the areas that were instrumental during the Reformation. I know we have at least one member who is very interested in the trip. She has already reached out to the agency sponsoring the tour for more information, especially potential dates and costs. In the meantime, I thought I would share it with all of you to see if there might be enough interest for our church to plan a trip.

10 Day Presbyterian Heritage Tour (Group Tour) – Journeys Unlimited

I fully intend to make it to the Highlands someday, but I cannot think of a better way to see it for the first time than to visit the birthplace of the Presbyterian Church with some of my favorite people! Please reach out to me if you are interested in this kind of trip. I know a lot depends on the information we do not yet have, but I will keep you informed as we find out more.

For all who are filled with a passion for travel, and especially for those who are currently or soon-to-be away, I share this Celtic blessing…

May the everlasting Father shield you east and west wherever you go.
God bless the path on which you go,
God bless the earth beneath your feet,
God bless your destination.
God be a smooth way before you,
a guiding star above you,
a keen eye behind you.
This day, this night, and forever.

Blessings and Peace,
