What is Sunday Service Like?

We are part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination, which is rooted in the Reformed tradition. We hold to that principles listed on the PCUSA’s website, that “God calls us to service in the world, that our life together is to be ordered in ways that enable all members to flourish, that God calls us to generous stewardship of what we have, and that we are to stay alert to the human tendency to idolatry and tyranny and respond to God’s call to work for a society that seeks justice.”

In fact, our motto is “Love First, Love All!” We welcome people of all denominations, backgrounds, identities, and persuasions, but our mode of worship is a traditional style of Reformed worship with liturgical depth and musical excellence (if we do say so ourselves!).

The structure of our worship service follows four themes. “Gathering Around the Word” is a time when God calls us to worship and we confess our sins and the sins of the world. Then we move into “Proclaiming the Word,” in which we have a moment with our children before the scriptures are read and the sermon is given.

Next, we flow into “Responding to the Word” by affirming our faith using a variety of creeds, such as the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds, excerpts from scripture, and occasionally more modern creeds, such as the Confession of Belhar, which was written in response to Apartheid in South Africa. On the first Sunday of every month, we serve Communion using grape juice and home-made bread with a gluten-free option, and all are welcome to join us at God’s table. We also collect tithes and offerings during this part of our service to show our gratitude for the gifts God has bestowed upon us.

Finally, we round out the service by “Following the Word into the World,” for we believe that true worship does not end with the benediction but is embodied in our daily interactions with a hurting world. We strive to “Love First, Love All” as we seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.

What Time Should I get there?

Our Sunday School hour begins at 9:15am and offers an adult class, a Youth Connect program for middle and senior high school students, a Faith Builders class for upper elementary students, and a Joy Makers class for Pre-K through 2nd graders.

We then have time for fellowship in our Commons area at 10:00. Come enjoy a cup of coffee and meet our members. Check out our bulletin boards to see what the Missions Team is doing or write out a prayer to hang on our Prayer Board.

Our worship service beings at 10:30 and usually lasts an hour, though we are not strict on the number of minutes. The Spirit has freedom to move, especially during our Children’s Moment!

What Should I Wear?

We are a come-as-you-are church. You will see many of our members in dresses, slacks and even a few suits, while others dress more casually in polo-style shirts, khaki pants and even shorts in the hottest months of summer. We are a judgement-free zone in which we truly value every person we encounter as having been made in the image of God, regardless of what you happen to be wearing.

What about my Kids?

We have a nursery that opens every Sunday at 9:00am which is usually run by two paid nursery workers, both of whom are currently enrolled as students at Dalton State. We also have volunteers that fill in when one of our hired nursery workers is absent. All who have contact with children, whether in Sunday School classes or in the nursery, are routinely background checked and annually trained on our child protection policy, which can be found here.

However, we also welcome children of all ages and abilities, including children and adults with neurodivergence, to attend our worship service. We believe that children’s noises and playfulness enhance, rather than detract from, the worship of God in our space. Use of our nursery is at the complete discretion of parents for newborns through Kindergarteners. We have resources and activity bags available in the Commons area for elementary aged children to take into worship with them to help them feel engaged throughout the service. Many parents also allow their children to bring quiet toys from home as well. (Legos and fidget toys are favorites!)

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Pastor Nicole njiskoot@firstpresdalton.org, who is also a parent of young children.
